Message from the Chair
As the summer sets in, we conclude an extremely busy and productive year for our department. Activities at the Brin Mathematics Research Center ramped up with eight workshops, three distinguished lectures and other special events, including the first-of-its-kind meeting of the Big10 Math Department Chairs. This summer we will host the first Brin Maryland Mathematics Camp for advanced high school students who show exceptional promise in mathematical sciences. We will also host a Research Experience for Undergraduates, with students from all over the country spending eight weeks in our department. This spring, we brought the arts to the department with monthly concerts in the Yorke Rotunda through a new partnership with the School of Music and tango lessons. We also had a very busy hiring season. Six new professors will join our department: Uri Bader (Brin Professor, moving from Weizmann Institute), Ron Peled (Brin Professor, moving from Tel Aviv University), Andrew Lawrie (Professor, moving from MIT), Yun Yang (Associate Professor, moving from UIUC), Or Hershkovits (Associate Professor, moving from Hebrew University), and Arka Adhikari (Assistant Professor, moving from Stanford). We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues and their families to Maryland. We also want to congratulate Jonathan Fernandes and Danul Gunatilleka for their promotion to Senior Lecturer and Tamas Darvas, Adam Kanigowski and Christian Zickert for their promotion to Professor. Debbie Franklin is retiring after 31 years with our department. We are very grateful for everything Debbie has done for our department and wish her all the best with this new phase in her life. We welcomed two new staff members in the business office: Rosemel Raqueno and Brittani Flores. Congratulations also to all of our graduates! We would love to hear from you. Please keep in touch! Wishing you a great summer break,
~Doron |
