BSCI 230 AIDS Fund

The students and staff of Higgins's section of the Spring, 2001 BSCI 230 (Introductory Cell Biology and Physiology) course are proud to announce a fund raising effort to support a rider in the 330 mile Raleigh to Washington AIDS Bicycle Ride in June.  We will raise the $2,400. required to support our entry and make a considerable donation to AIDS research.

For information on this event and the organization of riders that sponsor these events around the country, please go to:

http://www.spokebusters.org/default.htm

Our rider, Shelly GrowShelly Grow is originally from Minneapolis, MN.  She is a student in the MS Sustainable Development and Conservation Biology program.  She focuses her studies on alternative agriculture issues, both practices and policies.

"I have wanted to participate in the AIDS ride for awhile.  A group experience in support of a social cause is exhilarating, builds a sense of community, and, in this case, simultaneously raises money for AIDS victims and increases the awareness of AIDS.  I knew that I would experience this exhilaration and community feeling on the ride; I didn't anticipate that I would experience these feelings five months beforehand.

After mentioning my desire to participate in this ride, I was immediately supported by 160 other U-Marylanders, the BSCI230 class.  Our ability to raise both money and awareness about AIDS was greatly magnified and the community building experience began immediately.  Our class will be covering the campus, soliciting from friends and relatives, and doing whatever it takes to raise this money."

The money raised will be donated to Food and Friends and the Whitman-Walker Clinic.  F&F provides food services to over 700 people with AIDS in the DC Metro area.  The Clinic provides health care services, testing, education, and housing to men, women, and children with AIDS.  Most of their services are free.
