Francisella tularensis

  Extremely small, gram-negative coccobacilli


  Jellison Type A strains are the major biovar associated with disease in the United States


  Transmission by:
    1. Ticks from rabbits
    2. Direct contact with rabbits

  Appears clinically in one of several forms:
  1. Ulceroglandular
  2. Glandular
  3. Typhoidal
  4. Oculoglandular
  5. Oropharyngeal

  Facultative intracellular parasite that can survive in macrophages of the reticuloendothelial system
