  Family Plesiomonadaceae (Formerly Vibrionaceae)

  Plesiomonas shigelloides

  Gram-negative facultatively anaerobic bacillus

  Multiple polar flagella (lophotrichous)

  Isolated from aquatic environment

  Acquired by ingestion of or exposure to contaminated water or food or by exposure to amphibians or reptiles

  Cause sporadic diarrheal disease in humans

  Self-limiting gastroenteritis: secretory , colitis or chronic form

  Variety of extra-intestinal infections
