MAMPHYS - ZOOL 422 - 423 OnLine

Your Zoology 422/423 Course Staff, in the never ending quest for ways to enhance quality of life for Zoology ZOOL 422/423 students, now presents MAMPHYS, a listserv designed to promote communication among students, staff and of course Dr. Know-It-All. The time is NOW to subscribe to MAMPHYS (due to budget cuts, there will be no complimentary gifts for subscribing). MAMPHYS will be used to communicate information about the course to subscribers, and will provide a way for subscribers to pose questions about lectures to Dr. Know-it-All. Responses to questions will be sent to MAMPHYS, such that all subscribers will see the question and receive the answer (who could ask for anything more!). In addition, MAMPHYS will provide a convenient way to post lecture outlines and handouts, important information about lab, and other announcements of interest.

® HOW CAN I BE PART OF THIS ZOOLOGY 422/423 INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY?

First, you must have a campus computer WAM account. If you do not already have a computer alias on campus, DO NOT PASS GO! Students can register electronically (see How to Register for a WAM Account in a WAM lab). Instead, proceed directly to the Computer Science Center, Room 3326. Bring your student ID and current registration card with you. An account will be created for you by one of the counselors.

Once you have a WAM account, notice the other great things on the network (other than MAMPHYS) - for example, access to the library card catalog, the daily news, lists of University events, the ZOOL 422/423 WWW home page, and much more!

 

® DO I HAVE TO HAVE MY OWN COMPUTER IN ORDER TO BE PART OF MAMPHYS?

No. Any member of the UMD community can get a campus computer account. You can go to the computer science center or WAM lab to log into your account, and retrieve your MAMPHYS mail.

 

® SUBSCRIBING TO MAMPHYS

Next, you must SUBSCRIBE to MAMPHYS. Subscription is done automatically by the listserv computer, and the process could not be simpler.

1. Enter your WAM account using your name and password (do not try to subscribe from an account other than your own, or all of your MAMPHYS mail will be directed to that account).

2. Once into your account, you must send a mail message to the University's listserv computer, asking it to subscribe you to MAMPHYS. Your message should be sent to:

listserv@umdd.umd.edu

Your subscribe message is simply:

sub MAMPHYS your name

Mail this message, and you will be automatically subscribed to MAMPHYS. "sub" tells the listserv computer that you want to subscribe, "MAMPHYS" is the name of the listserv you are subscribing to, and your name should follow. That's it!

® GETTING OLD MESSAGES FROM MAMPHYS

After subscribing to MAMPHYS, you will get a welcome message that includes some important instructions, e.g., how to retrieve previously sent or deleted messages. DO NOT delete this original message! To get a list of previously sent MAMPHYS messages, send an email to: listserv@umdd.umd.edu Do ot put a subject heading on your memo and do not put any blank ilines at the top of it. Your message should read: index MAMPHYS You will then receive a listing of these messages and instructions for retrieving them.
