Growth on cyanobacteria media that lacked both nitrogen and carbon sources indicated that the organism(s) were nitrogen-fixing and photosynthetic.
Gram stain of cyanobacteria at 40x. The pink color of the filaments indicated that organism was Gram negative.
Cyanobacteria viewed at 40x.  Wet mount.  Note the unbranched, unsheathed filaments.
Wet mount of cyanobacteria, viewed at 100x.  Within chains of cells, morphologically distinct cells present, specifically larger, round, brownish cells called heterocysts.
Wet mount of sample taken from cyanobacteria plates.  Presence of diatoms (brown cells) in combination with cyanobacteria filaments demonstrates an impure sample.
Wet mount of sample taken from cyanobacteria plate, 100x. Developmental stage confirmed by presence of smaller chains of cells without cell differentiation.  Motility was also observed.
