BSCI 363 TERM PAPER ASSIGNMENT

Spring Semester, 2001

Topic: Population Viability Assessment and management recommendations for an endangered animal population of your choice (EXCEPT African Wild Dogs), using the computer model Vortex.
Date Due: Introduction and simulation results due 13 April 2001, full paper due 4 May 2001.
Late Policy: Late papers will be accepted, but will automatically lose 4 points per day (or over the weekend).
Requirements: 10 -12 pages (maximum), typed and double-spaced. Format as for publication of a "Research Paper" in the journal Conservation Biology. See "Instructions to Authors" in a recent issue or at least a subset of instruction on the home page (click here).

Format is worth 10 points, so be sure to follow all the specifications!

Content:
A. Objectives

B. Natural History of Species

C. Population Demography D. Population Ecology E. Population Genetics F. Population Viability Assessment
Discuss the results of your simulations - explain the results in your own words, not just a table of values. Also, report the results for the analyses needed to address the questions below:

G. Management Recommendations
Suggest feasible management strategies (i.e., biological, political, sociological, and economic) based on your analyses above (or additional simulations you performed). Based on what you perceive to be the major threats to your population, suggest a management strategy that takes into account long-term viability considerations, as well as budget constraints (a very likely limitation in the real world).

H. Literature Cited
At least 10 relevant references from sources other than web pages should be cited in the text and listed in the bibliography with at least 5 coming from peer-reviewed scientific journals (i.e. Conservation Biology, not Discover Magazine).

I. Parameter List
The paper should have an addendum page or pages where you list all of the parameters you used, their value (or range of values), and a citation or very short explanation of how you determined that value.
