Klebsiella Summary


Family Enterobacteriaceae

  Klebsiella pneumoniae

   Klebsiella oxytoca

Klebsiella pneumoniae:

  Large moist colonies due to large mucoid polysaccharide capsule (K antigen) that protects from phagocytosis and aids in adherence

  Non-motile (no H antigen)

  LPS with O antigens and endotoxin activity (Lipid A)

  Enterotoxin: similar to ST and LT and plasmid mediated

  Clinical Syndromes:

Primary pneumonia when underlying medical problems are evident (e.g., alcoholism)  

Urinary tract and wound infections

Bacteremia and meningitis

Diarrhea by enterotoxigenic strains

  Treatment: cephalosporins
