Message from the Chair
It's May 2021. Another year passed and we got used to doing math virtually, but we are all craving to come back to campus and experience the university the way we used to prior to the pandemic. While we are planning a full return to in-person teaching in the Fall, many things will look different.
Four colleagues retired, and we wish them a life of happiness and great health: John Benedetto, Mike Fitzpatrick, Mark Freidlin, and Jim Schafer. Recent faculty departures and the strong support of the dean provided us with an opportunity to rethink and reshape the mathematical profile of the department. We are very excited about the future direction of the department with our seven new faculty members: Lei (Alice) Chen, Dan Cristofaro-Gardiner, Bassam Fayad, Yu Gu, Huy Nguyen, Christian Rosendal, and Boyu Zhang.
This is also the time of year when we wish our graduating students the best the world has to offer. As you leave Maryland, we hope you will keep us informed about all the great things that come your way. We will miss you. Congratulations, Class of 2021!
Our experience with online math instruction over the past three semesters taught us that remote teaching can be effective, so we asked Associate Chair Antoine Mellet to share his thoughts about what is here to stay. Read on for this and more exciting news and updates about our faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
