The Fall 2025 semester was truly spectacular for our department. We were thrilled to welcome several new professors: Chris Henderson (PDEs), Or Hershkovits (Geometric Analysis), Sri Kunnawalkam (Operator Algebras), Andy Senger (Algebraic Topology) and Bogdan Zavyalov (Number Theory). Additionally, we welcomed a new lecturer, Matt Wilson, and a new staff member in the business office, Arturo Alipio. We also bid a farewell to Steve Halperin, the former Dean and a dear colleague, who retired.
Our enrollments reached an all-time high with nearly 900 math majors. The advanced courses saw enrollments at levels rarely seen before, highlighting the growing interest and engagement in our programs. Our distinguished faculty continued to earn accolades, with several professors achieving significant recognition. Dan Cristofaro-Gardiner, Adam Kanigowski and Ron Peled were invited as speakers and Dima Dolgopyat will be a plenary speaker at the upcoming International Congress of Mathematics. Cristofaro-Gardiner was also honored with the prestigious Brin Prize.
This semester has been a testament to the growth and excellence of our department, and we look forward to continuing this momentum in the future.
This spring, we are thrilled to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Department of Mathematics. The festivities will occur on Saturday, April 25, in conjunction with Maryland Day. We invite you to join us for this memorable event: a day filled with fun, entertainment, and a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends.
In addition, the Brin Mathematics Research Center is sponsoring three exciting activities:
- Big 10 Math Department Chairs will gather for a group meeting at Maryland for the third consecutive year.
- Symposium on Science and Diplomacy will be hosted in collaboration with the School of Public Policy.
- Workshop on Magic and Mathematics. Perhaps the most exciting event is a weeklong workshop in March that brings together mathematically minded magicians and mathematicians interested in magic. While the workshop is limited to invited participants, some of the award-winning magicians will perform in a public magic show on campus at The Clarice on Wednesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to purchase your tickets for this unique, one-time event before they sell out!
Finally, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to our winter graduates. Welcome to 2026!
