Message from the Chair Spring 2026 was an amazing semester! On April 25, we celebrated the Math Department’s 150th anniversary. It was wonderful to see so many alumni and friends who came to campus to celebrate this milestone. The Brin Mathematics Research Center sponsored several other exciting activities, including a meeting of the Big 10 math department chairs, a symposium on science and diplomacy organized in collaboration with the School of Public Policy, and a workshop on Magic and Mathematics that brought to campus several of the top magicians in the world for an unforgettable week. Congratulations to our colleagues on their well-deserved promotions: James Conway, Anna Szczekutowicz and Natalia Tchetcherina were promoted to senior lecturer; Greg Chadwick and Alan Yashinski were promoted to principal lecturer; Huy Nguyen and Boyu Zhang were promoted to associate professor with tenure; and Haizhao Yang was promoted to professor. This issue of our newsletter provides many stories about our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Specifically, I would like to thank Dave and Lucia Levermore for their generosity in supporting our department and graduate students. I feel honored to serve a department with so many wonderful colleagues that care so much about it. Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to our 2025-26 graduates. Please come back and visit! You do not have to wait for the next big anniversary party. Wishing the entire Math family a great and relaxing summer! |
