Mrs Julia Punch, an middle school science teacher, spent 8 weeks in summer 2005 in a research laboratory at the University of Maryland College Park.

She learned about the physiology and genetic of Halobacterium, a salt-loving microbe.

She is now teaching her 7th and 8th grade classes to grow this microorganism, to extract its DNA and to visualize the DNA by electrophoresis.
