  • What is the iTunes U?

iTunes U is provided by Apple Inc. It allows course contents in audio or video format can be accessed anywhere and anytime. No matter what platform you are using, you can go to http://www.umd.edu/itunesu to download the content. You can listen it on a computer or with your ipod. It increases students' study opportunities. For more information about iTuens U, please visit iTuens U on Apple website .

 
 
  • What is the systme requirement to view content on iTunes U?
    • iTunes version 6.0 or later for Mac and Windows
    • Safari 2.0 or later on Mac
    • Internet Explorer 6.0 or later on Windows
 
 
  • What are the supported formats and size for the content on iTunesU?
    • Audio files(AAC, MP3) with appropriate file extensions(.m4a, .mp3). For best quality, convert MP3 fiels greater than 32 MB to AAC format.
    • Video files (MPEG-4 with H.264 compression) with appropriate file extensions(.mp4, .m4v, .mov). For best results with iPod, Apple recommends using H.264.
    • PDF files

We recommend you to create audio/video files smaller than 200MB, keep the video size as 320*240pixels.

 
 
  • What kind of software and hardware do I need to make a podcast?
    • For audio recording , you can try the free, cross-platform sound editor and recorder: Audacity
    • For video, you can use digital camera for recording and Final Cut Pro for editing.

 
Streaming Media  

 

Streaming media is a way to delivery data via the internet. Users can view the content(video or audio) immediately without downloading the entire file. For more information about streaming media, please visit http://www.media.umd.edu

What applications do I need to create files for streaming?
You can use iMovie or Final cut pro for capturing and editing, and use Quicktime Pro or Final cut pro to encode.

What are the supported formats and size for the content on streaming server?
UMD streaming server accept these types of files: rm, ra, mov, mp3, mpeg4, swv.
