Summary
We
successfully enriched for Anabaena, a nitrogen-fixing, photosynthetic,
filamentous cyanobacteria. By allowing growth in liquid cyanobacteriamedia
for a week, we were able to increase the sample concentrations enough to
allow successful growth on cyanobacteria solid media. Once we achieved
the growth of green colonies on this media, we conducted extensive microscopy
to confirm the presence of nitrogen-fixing, photosynthetic, filamentous
cyanobacteria in addition to determining what kind we had grown.
We confirmed the presence of Anabaena in our sample through the observation
of non-branching, unsheathed filaments with cell differentiation.
