General
Laboratory Safety and Guidelines:
General
Principles: The laboratory is a potentially
dangerous place to those who are careless or irresponsible,
irrespective of their experience or skill. Common
sense combined with the thoughtful use of instruments
and chemicals is essential to prevent injury to
yourself or others. The following rules apply
in the laboratory, without exception.
1.
NO food or drink may be brought into the laboratory.
NO smoking is allowed in the building.
2. If the fire alarm is
sounded, immediately exit the building by using
the closest exit. Walk away from the building and
do not use the elevator.
3. All broken
glass, used Pasteur pipettes, etc. must be discarded
in the BROKEN GLASS CONTAINERs. Sharp objects such
as needles and razor blades must be discarded in
the SHARP OBJECTS DISPOSAL CONTAINERS. Never place
glass or sharp objects into regular waste-baskets.
In addition, this laboratory utilizes urethane,
a carcinogenic and mutagenic substance for anesthesia
of the animals. Any urethane-contaminated waste,
including solids (i.e. gloves, paper towels etc),
liquid and SHARP (i.e. needles and syringes) must
be discarded into an appropriate container, designated
for hazardous material/ urethane waste. However,
these containers ARE NOT TRASH CANS and must be
handled in a very difficult manner when full. Regular
waste SHOULD NOT BE DISPOSED OF IN THESE CONTAINERS!!!
4. Students
are expected to clean up their lab bench area before
leaving the laboratory. Specific instructions will
be provided on the clean up of specialized areas
or instruments. You must clean you own glassware
and instruments when you are finished with your
experiments for the day.
5. You must
wear closed shoes in the laboratory because inadvertent
chemical spills and glass breakage occur.
6. In case
of problems, the following safety aids are
present in or near the laboratory.
• A fire extinguisher is located IN THE HALLWAY
to the left
of the front entry door to the lab.
• A first-aid kit is located in the bench
near the entry door for the lab.
• An eye-wash is located near the rear entry
door for the lab.
• An emergency shower is located near the
rear entry door to the lab.
• Disposable gloves and safety glasses are always
available.
• The nearest fire alarm is located in the hallway,
to the LEFT of the
front entry door to the lab.
7. The job
of the TA is to supervise the laboratory. The TA
is in charge of the laboratory and is responsible
for the proper and safe operation of the laboratory.
If you have any question about any protocol,
ASK THE TA. Experiments cannot be conducted in the
absence of the TA without prior permission.
